The Flying Saucer House, TN, USA

The Flying Saucer House, Signal Mountain, TN, USA
About three weeks ago we published an article on the "UFO House" in Royse City, TX. That was one of the late 20th century Futuro homes. Here we bring you another "UFO" style home though this one is be more commonly referred to as the "Flying Saucer House". This home, while just as strange as the Futuro homes, is unique and very definitely "one of a kind". Constructed in 1970 the "Flying Saucer House" is located on Signal Mountain in Tennessee on a switch back along ...

... scenic US Highway 127 in Hamilton County. The late Curtis W. King and his family built the circular 1,954 square foot [Hamilton County Tax Assessor] house which sits on six pillars; the "landing gear" if you like. The property is primarily constructed of steel and concrete and features three bedrooms and two bathrooms along with living areas on three levels. The staircase entry to the home is retractable. A local man, Dr. Cleaveland, who visited the home at an open house in its early days is quoted in a February 2007 Chattanooga Times Free Press article [reproduced on Waymarking.com] describing the home this way:

"Entering the Space House is an experience like none other on this planet. Part of the entryway is lined with wallpaper, ending at a traditional residential door. An amber-colored light panel illuminates the doorway.

The first thing one sees inside is a bar with mirrors lining the curved wall. Up another flight of stairs is the main living area. The living room is open to the kitchen which has a black-and-white checkerboard floor. A sliding glass door opens onto a small deck overlooking Signal Mountain Boulevard. Two bedrooms and a bathroom also occupy the main level.

The master suite is perhaps the most prominent interior feature. The round room is raised on a platform in the center of the main living area. But the master bedroom comfortably fits a bed and features a bathroom with Roman-style tub."

The real estate site Zillow lists the home as being valued at $157600 as at July 29th 2011. The site also lists several sales dating back to a sale in 1994 for $77K through $126K in 2006, $165K in 2007 and then finally dropping to $131K in 2008 - it seems like even spaceships got hit by the financial downturn though at its current valuation it seems to be making up ground again.

Not surprisingly given it's stange and surreal appearance the home has grabbed the attention of the media on several occasions having featured on HGTV and generated 2008 articles by Fox News and MSNBC.

There are also several videos around which give some interesting views of the outside and the inside of the residence. The videos tab below includes the three I found most interesting. Two are related to the auction of the house at it's last sale and one was filmed by a family who had rented the residence for a vacation.
